It Is Time to Leave the Comfort Zone

Are we heading towards the dark times? The answer may vary and depend on whether you are ready to leave your comfort zone or not.

Jan has studied social science for many years. He is interested in providing solutions based on his experience.

It's time to look for possibilities and take us through the tough times.

Photo by Ross Sneddon on Unsplash

It Is Time For Creativity

Never in modern times has pure creativity been such an important skill. With the all more hostile situation in the world, the focus on finding creative solutions to create a better tomorrow for yourself and your loved ones should be an absolute priority.

Currently, we have to deal with the financial and climate crisis. As if it was not enough, the war in Ukraine and other military conflicts in the world is making our lives much more unpredictable than what would be ideal.

How To Tackle Energy Crisis

Let's be honest. Energy Crisis is affecting people over the whole world. If you are living in Europe, which is probably the most affected continent since Russia attacked Ukraine, you are currently preparing for what could be a very tough and cold winter.

As the energy prices continue rising upwards without much hope for a decrease in the nearest future, the worries are not unrationalized. The solution is simple yet everything but not a very comfortable one.

If you are not rich enough to afford higher bills, it is time to prepare for some energy savings. The easiest method will involve putting on more clothes and thus reduce the warmth needed. A much tougher one for some individuals would be to exercise more to raise body temperature and reduce the need for warmer temperatures inside your home. These two are simple yet effective solutions to tackle the energy crisis.

How To Tackle Financial Crisis

This one goes hand in hand with the one about energy saving. The bad news is that energy is not the only thing that will cost you more money than before. Yes, I am talking about the rising prices of food.

It is pretty clear to most of us that consuming food is something we all need to do to feel good and function, so making radical savings here will not be an option. But let's face the fact that a lot of us consume much more food than what is healthy. In other words, I am willing to put my positive glasses on and see opportunities here.

Obesity is a spread issue, killing a massive amount of people every single year. Could increasing food prices be beneficial? I choose to believe so. If you're not rich, you'll start to think about what food you're buying and how much you buy.

It may feel uncomfortable, especially in the beginning, but if we learn to be more reasonable, it could benefit us long-term in ways we never imagined. Eating less may help you with your health as well as with your self-esteem. If it has been hard to discipline yourself when it comes to buying food, well, higher prices may be the solution.

More Walking, Less Driving

This one is tough. Especially for me, as I love to drive cars. But most of us know and understand that cars can be expensive liabilities. The costs include fuel, repairs, insurance, et cetera. If you live outside the city, having a vehicle is, of course, a necessity. However, if you live in town, there are a few excuses left to use.

Instead of driving, take a walk to work, school, shop, event, or whatever else you need or want to attend. Besides saving money, you will develop better health and get in shape that will benefit you long-term.

And, if you live in the countryside, you can plan your driving routines a little wiser, so that you can save a little bit of money. Remember, even small steps can have significant results and reduce your worries.

Whether we are heading towards dark times is very difficult to answer. There have been, without a doubt, worse periods in our history. On the other hand, the situation worsened quite rapidly in the last few years, and there are no signs that we should get out of it anytime soon.

Whether it will be even worse or get better is out of our hands. What's not is the response to the problem. As long as you are prepared to leave your comfort zone, then you will do just fine. If not, then you will have to face a struggle or two.

What does a man want from his woman for life?

Dear Ladies! Just stand up with your man, fight for him, to maintain his good faith. He should always have this confidence that you are always willing to boost his energy. Support your man with strength.

Let’s begin the discussion with the first thought. “What does a man expect from his woman as a partner for a lifetime?”

A man wants that his lady should respect him, understand him and treat him as an innocent child. Men want a partner who will be trustworthy, faithful, and supportive in all matters. He wants a companion who will stand by his side and, considering all reasons for his mood, it's no surprise that dependability on each other would continue to be attractive.

Few things men need from women

  • Respect & trust
  • Personal drive and freedom
  • Heart full of love & care
  • Encouragement & support
  • Attention & Companionship
  • Positive attitude and energy
  • Friendship and attachment
  • Powerful relation
  • Strong bonding and physical connection

A gentleman knows well that there are super bad men out there in society who have done you wrong like trust-breaking. But why should he lift the load of wrong things done by other men? He is not responsible for all the blunders or negativity performed by other males. I know, most men will keep chasing you, follow you and track your path even when you push them away and use these statements, “I don’t trust, men”, “all men are the same” and blah blah. But a courteous gentleman will stop, right there at that point, right? Then, only a man with no self-respect or no self-worth will stay where respect is not being served.

Start with a fresh impression, no negative decisions, without passing any judgments, no loads of past, etc. But the man just pretends to be strong, but deep inside all men are weak and emotionally sensitive. They try to look macho and show all rough and tough. But actually, they need the same level of care, love, attention, respect, warmth, and the same support that a woman needs from their man.

So, ladies try not to be his mother but be his soulmate and companion. Most men suck with sentimental feelings, therefore please be more patient and be more persistent with him. Be his perfect partner please try to read his eyes, listen to his words and feel his silence. He just needs full attention while dealing with something wrong inside (most men demand from their lady). He just needs supportive words and one step away from sharing everything with you on your shoulders, he wants to feel the warmth, purity, and loyalty from you, that you need from him. Come on, young ladies! Go ahead and be the strong woman who can take care of his man and deal with his every weakness strongly. “A lion always needs his lioness likewise a king needs his queen.”

A man believes his woman to respect him, with no devotion, no dedication, but a healthy bonding and strong mutual understanding. His lady should trust him blindly and faithfully until he breaks it or proves you wrong. A woman feels insecure when his man praises another woman more in front of her, same case with men happens, men too feel insecure and it’s a natural phenomenon. Young men also want attractive compliments about their appearance, their clothes, their smile, their look, and their bodies. A man also needs moral support from his beautiful lady.

Men are tired hard to fulfill the expectations of society. They have to lift the load of society and still have to maintain their level strong to support their family. He is also busy pleasing the demands of society or people. They are smashing, crushing him under the constant pressure that they should buy a big house, a fancy car, costly clothes, go on expensive vacation tours, and show off. Ohh, come on ladies, stand with your man on these shit and stupidities, hold his hand tightly for a lifetime. Let him know that you both are enough and will earn and make it done, together. Tell him that more money or bank balance won’t mean more love or respect from both sides, but support does. You are allowed to announce to him that you are proud of him anyway. Be a woman who builds her man’s level up financially and morally, not make him feel useless and worthless for less money.

Lastly, don't allow others to talk shit about your man. Go and stand up for him, fight for him, to maintain his good faith. He should always have this confidence that you are always willing to boost his energy. Dear Ladies! Just support your man!!

Michael Gove: Backs Sunak Over Truss.

Truss Is Just Wrong: Gove.

Michael Gove.

Michael Gove has spent 11 years as a frontline politician. Mr Gove has now admitted he is done with front line politics and does not expect to return either. No matter who is Prime Minister in September Gove is not coming back by his own admission.

Mr Gove has declared his support for Rishi Sunak. Describing Mr Sunak as the right man for the job of being leader of the Conservative party and Prime Minister.

Mr Gove trashed Liz Truss's policy of lowering taxes and refusing to give any finanical help to energy consumers.

Michael Gove said Ms Truss was taking a "holiday from reality" as were her supporters. Mr Gove was sacked by outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson for telling him to quit over partygate. Johnson and Gove have history as when Mr Johnson first stood to be leader of the Conservative party Mr Gove caused his downfall. Mr Gove was accused of being treacherous much like Sunak ironically enough when he was accused of plunging the knife (metaphorically obviously) into Boris' back.

Mr Gove said you cannot "lower taxes" and at the same time reject "handouts". Lowering taxes would only benefit the rich and do nothing to help struggling energy bill payers.

Mr Gove also said the idea of grammar schools was complete madness from Liz Truss. Given the financial mess the country is in and yet Truss thinks there is money to invest in grammar schools.

Originally Mr Gove backed Kemi Badenoch but eventually she was eliminated from the race to succeed Boris. Now Gove's support for Sunak has been welcomed by those running Rishi Sunak's leadership campaign.

Can Mr Sunak cause an upset and win the race to be Prime Minister? It would take a miracle for Sunak to catch up to Truss and overtake her. However, it would appear that Truss if you believe the bookies is a dead cert to be Prime Minister by September.

What Is Meteorology?

The study of meteorology:
The science that concentrates on the Earth`s atmosphere is called meteorology. Meteorologists keep track of data such as air pressure, wind direction and speed, temperature, humidity, and weather trends. Meteorologists use data from the land, sea, and higher atmosphere to investigate the reasons behind certain meteorological conditions. They create both short- and long-term forecasts of weather and climatic phenomena using computer and mathematical models.

In addition to making predictions, meteorologists also look at weather trends, climate change, weather prediction models, and how weather affects the surrounding.

Scales of meteorology:
Microscale, mesoscale, synoptic scale, and global scale are the four meteorological scales. In their profession, meteorologists frequently concentrate on a single scale. The focus of microscale meteorology is on short-lived events with sizes between a few millimetres and a few kilometres (less than a day).

Microscale meteorologists frequently research the interactions between soil, plant, and surface water close to the ground. The study of chemistry is frequently involved in microscale meteorology. Microscale meteorology includes tracking contaminants in the air. Energy, heat, and moisture are transferred as a result of convection, the fundamental components of weather. The middle of the day, when the sun angle is at its highest, is when a significant portion of air and moisture are warmed in both an MCC and an MCS. Condensing into clouds as it ascends into the cooler atmosphere, this heated air mass turns water vapour into precipitation.

Synoptic in scale, high- and low-pressure systems are visible on local weather predictions.Similar to convection, pressure is a key meteorological concept that underlies numerous large-scale weather phenomena, including hurricanes and severe cold outbreaks. When the air pressure at the Earth's surface is lower than the area immediately around it, low-pressure systems develop. High-pressure regions seek low-pressure systems with wind and moisture. As a result, clouds are formed when moist air from the surroundings rises, expands, and condenses into water vapour.

The majority of our weather occurrences are caused by this movement of moisture and air. Low-pressure systems (cyclones) that form over tropical oceans in the Western Hemisphere are what cause hurricanes. Convection occurs as a result of the system's huge uptake of warm moisture from the ocean, which raises wind speeds and lowers pressure. All tropical weather systems are regularly forecasted and reported on by the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.

The National Hurricane Center's forecasts are used by businesses and government representatives throughout the United States. When the air pressure at the Earth's surface is higher than the area immediately around it, high-pressure systems develop. Since this pressure tends to move vertically downhill, dry air and clear skies are possible. High-pressure systems that form over the Arctic and migrate over the Northern Hemisphere are the cause of extremely frigid temperatures.

Due to the high pressure exerted by this frigid air's extreme density, any moisture or heat cannot remain within the system. Weather patterns that involve the movement of heat, wind, and moisture from the tropics to the poles are referred to as global scale phenomena. The large-scale air movement known as global atmospheric circulation, which aids in distributing thermal energy (heat) across the Earth's surface. The relatively consistent passage of winds around the world is known as global atmospheric circulation. As air masses migrate from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas, winds are created. Hadley cells dominate the atmospheric circulation on a global scale. Tropical and equatorial convection patterns are called Hadley cells. Trade wind direction is predicted by meteorologists using Hadley cells.

Businesses pay close attention to the strength of trade winds because they assist ships travel more quickly, especially those that export goods across oceans. Meteorologists research long-term climate trends that interfere with the atmosphere's overall circulation. Ocean currents and trade winds cross the Pacific Ocean during an El Nino. Every five years on average, El Nino disrupts the global air circulation and has an impact on regional weather patterns and economies from Australia to Peru.

The Southern Oscillation, which affects air pressure in the Pacific Ocean, is connected to El Nino. While air pressure rises over the western Pacific, close to the shores of Australia and Indonesia, it falls over the eastern Pacific, towards the coast of the Americas. Farmers, fisherman, and inhabitants along the shore can better prepare for the climate pattern by understanding the meteorological processes of El Nino. El Nino is related to the Southern Oscillation, which changes air pressure in the Pacific Ocean.

Over the eastern Pacific, near the coasts of the Americas, air pressure decreases while rising over the western Pacific, near the coasts of Australia and Indonesia. By comprehending the meteorological mechanisms of El Nino, farmers, fishermen, and residents along the beach can better prepare for the climate pattern. .

Background on Meteorology

Torricelli created the barometer in 1643 to precisely measure air pressure. The barometer continues to be a crucial tool for comprehending and predicting weather systems. The first contemporary weather maps were created by meteorological offices using this new technology, which also allowed them to communicate information. Meteorologists may analyse a wider regional picture of the weather and produce more precise forecasts with the use of these large-scale weather maps.

The ideas of air masses and fronts, which serve as the cornerstones of contemporary weather forecasting, were created by a group of Norwegian meteorologists in the 1920s. These meteorologists found that enormous cold and warm air masses move and collide in patterns that are the foundation of many weather systems. Meteorology made significant strides during World Wars I and II due to military actions. To enhance their understanding of weather, the military made significant investments in training, research, and new technologies.

Radar, which was created to detect the existence, direction, and speed of aircraft and ships, was the most significant of these new technology. The technological advancements of the 1950s and 1960s allowed meteorologists to observe and predict weather patterns on a large scale more quickly and easily. Large-scale weather patterns, such as the revolving succession of high- and low-pressure systems that surround our planet, could be predicted using these models. .

Today's Meteorology:
These pulses are processed by a computer, which also establishes the horizontal dimension of the clouds and precipitation as well as their speed and direction of motion. Dual-polarisation radar is a recent innovation that sends both horizontal and vertical radio wave pulses. Dual-polarisation radar can estimate precipitation better with this extra pulse. Flash flood and winter weather forecasts will be significantly improved by dual polarisation radar.

The largest tornado research project in history, VORTEX2, was launched by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Science Foundation in two-thousand-nine. To gather information on how, when, and why tornadoes originate, the VORTEX2 crew, which was made up of roughly 200 personnel and more than 80 meteorological instruments, went more than 16,000 kilometres (10,000 miles) over the American Great Plains. In order to comprehend weather events on a worldwide scale, satellites are crucial. More than half of the surface of the Earth is covered by the three Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) that are operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and NOAA.

Be Careful about What You Share on Your Social Media Profile

Social networking sites have exploded in popularity over the last decade or so. Since there are so many people online, it's important that you are careful about what you share. Here are some tips for creating your social networking profile.

Over the past decade or so, online social networks have exploded in popularity. There’s always a new one coming out and more and more people are signing up. One of the primary reasons people are so drawn to them is that they allow you to connect with others and develop friendships with those who share the same interests as you. They also allow you to connect with friends and family who you may have lost touch with over the years.

The key to finding and connecting with others is to sign up for a social networking website and create a profile. After all, as mentioned, most people join these sites to connect with others who share their same interests and passions. We all want to find others who share our beliefs, goals, interests, and views- right? If you don’t create a profile for the website, it would be impossible to know anything about you. This is why social networking profiles are so critical.

Unfortunately, social networking websites are also great places for internet predators to stalk their next victim. Therefore, it’s important that you pay attention to what you include and what you don’t include on your profile. In this article, we’ll explore some tips for creating your social networking profile.

Tips for Creating Your Profile

When creating a profile for a social networking website, a lot of emphasis is put on what should be included or displayed. Many “experts” suggest that pictures and lots of detailed personal info will get you the best responses. While it’s true that this will increase your views, you may be getting views that you don’t want. No matter what you might believe, there really are no restrictions on who can view your personal information. In fact, anyone, even if they are not part of your online community will be able to find your profile.

Since most of the social networking websites allow anyone to see your profile, it’s important that you are careful about what you share. Therefore, your focus needs to be on what you should not put on your profile instead of what you should. This will help you protect yourself both online and in the real world.

Choose Your Photo Carefully

As mentioned, it’s typically suggested that you add photos to your social networking profiles. This allows others to see what you look like and see that you’re a real person. If you want to post a personal picture, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, you must make sure that it isn’t too revealing or seductive. While most people can look at them without being affected- but they can be dangerous if some people get ahold of them.

Never Include Your Full Name & Address

If you do decide that you want to post a picture of yourself on you profile, you want to be cautious about any other information you add. You may not really give it much thought- after all, a picture is just a picture. However, if you have your full name and address, it can be quite dangerous. It’s best if you just put your first name on your profile and never add an address. This will make it much harder for someone to get in touch with you offline.

Be Vague with Your Location

Many of the social networking sites require you to choose a location. Some may allow you to simply select a region, while others require you to choose a city and state. If you can, you may choose to list only your state and not your city. If you must choose a city, you may want to consider using a nearby city, especially if you’re in a small town.

If you do live in a small town and you list that town, it makes it that much easier for an internet predator to get to you. Therefore, it’s a good idea to carefully choose your answer to the question of your location.

Don’t Post Any Other Specifics

In addition to the above, it’s best if you don’t post any specific information regarding your children, where your home is located, where you work, how much you make, when and where you plan to vacation, or any other identifying information. The less information you give, the less likely you will become a target.

Social networking websites are becoming more and more popular. They can be a great way to reconnect with friends and family who you have lost touch with and to meet new people who share your views, goals, interests, and beliefs. However, it can also be a place where internet predators can stalk you. If you keep these tips in mind, you should be able to enjoy social networking without having to watch your back.

Kreuzberg: Berlin´s Iconic and Cool Neighborhood

As one of Europe´s most hipster neighborhoods, Kreuzberg is Berlin´s zone of tolerance with its mecca of alternative pubs, street art, small shops and galleries, markets and always some upcoming conserts. A cool and rebellious neighborhood which seems to never sleep.

I am a Norwegian writer with careers within art, design, history, tourism and journalism. My second home is in a small village in Spain.

Berlin: a multicultural metropolis

Berlin is an enormously large city. Not only in extent, but also in content. Geographically the city is nine times bigger than Paris. The city dates back to the 13th century, and culturally it has an infinite mixture of what was, is and is predicted to come.

The city is divided into 12 different administrative districts with Mitte as its central and most urban looking neighborhood. Many tourists do not leave this area as it is packed with must-see sights as the Reichstag, Brandenburger Tor and a lot of shops and restaurants.

But do not loose the experience of the other areas' lovely uniqueness and personality, whether they border the Grunewald Forest or the banks of The River Spree. Leave your high-heeled shoes at home if you want to get to know the city. The distances are large, so use the well-functioning metro system, or jump on a double-decker when walking feels too overwhelming.

In this article I head for Kreuzberg and its vibrating uniqueness and lively atmosphere.

The slogan "High without drugs" on the left captures the attention of those who come to Kreuzberg via Schilligbrücke. In the middle St. Thomas Church. On the right the characteristic water tubes in blue or pink which criss-cross parts of the city.

A cornucopia of cultural events

After the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 and the German reunification i 1990, Kreuzberg became a hotspot for counterculture. Today you will find all kinds of people; hipsters, influencers, students, artists, poor and rich. The area reflects the inhabitants as a melting pot for differences and tolerance. And a lot of this comes out as creative freedom. Countless of galleries and museums are to be found in between trendy cafés, restaurants, bars, clubs and shops.

Kreuzberg is the district that never sleeps. Here you can feel the pulse and heartbeat of music and art all year round. Whether it is at an exhibition, wandering along the street surrounded by colorful graffiti, or at an outdoor or indoor concert. Or perhaps listening to experimental electronic music in a church?

Time for concert in St.Thomas Church. This was the biggest church in Berlin before the inauguration of the Berliner Dom in 1905. Friedrich Adler designed and built the church between 1865 and 1869. It is constructed in a classicist style.

36Boys and "Maxim"

Kreuzberg is known for its large percentage of immigrants and descendants of immigrants, especially of Turkish origin.

One of the first hip-hop activists in Berlin, Attila Murat Aydin (1970-2003) was of Turkish descent and lived his last years in Kreuzberg. Also known as "Maxim", he was as a rapper, breakdancer, beatboxer and a graffiti artist who played first and foremost an important role in shaping the hip-hop culture in Berlin.

After he was tragically murdered on his 33rd birthday, he became a legend and hero among his followers. And although he is no longer here, both his memory, music and spirit continue to live on.

Attila also founded the name of the 36Boys, a gang of primarily Turkish immigrants from the Kreuzberg district who were active and involved in crime until the 1990s. But Attila was strong against violence and was regarded as an integration figure.

From a large house wall in the heart of Kreuzberg, Attila stares at us with a fixed gaze and open arms. The large graffiti work honors Berlin´s and the neighborhood's great innovative graffiti and hip-hop artist.

Oranienstrasse: Kreuzberg´s heart

Oranienstrasse is Kreuzberg´s vibrtaing nerve and beating heart capturing the essence of the area. The two kilometer "must see street" runs from Moritzplatz via Oranienplatz to Heinrichplatz which is not fare from Görlitzer Bahnhof. The street, and partly the neighboring streets, offers a lot of small boutiques with new and vintage clothes, shoos, books and records, yarn for knitting, colors for art painting, wall papers, retro furniture, bike and skate shops, bags with a picture of Frida Kahlo's face, fine exclusive chocolate and colorful flowers. Oranienstrasse is the place for everybody who are seeking new alternative shopping experiences.

In the same street and in the surrounding area, you will find small distinctive cafés, snack bars and restaurants with a variety of international food.

Among clubs is the legendary former punk and new wave club SO36 still a place for concerts and parties in the night.

The Schokofabrik; Turkish bath and Women´s Centre

The Schokofabrik does not produce chocolate like the name indicates, but helps to empower women from different cultural backgrounds. With its long history in feminist Berlin, it has a history as the biggest women´s centre in Europe as well.

The women centre opened back in 1988 and could then offer the first Turkish bath in Germany. The beautifully designed Hamam and sauna is also popular among many lesbians.

In addition to beauty care and wellness, it is also a place for networking.

Cultural and political events are also organized and among the many possibilities are courses in self-defence.

Entering the area on the ground floor is the Bar Marianne which opens its doors in the evenings.

SO36; punk, crossover and visual art

The SO36 music club is well known for its music environment far beyond Germany's borders. The club took its name from the historic postcode of Kreuzberg area, SO36. The club focused originally on punk and new wave music, and in the 1970s it was often frequented by musicians such as David Bowie and Iggy Pop.

New York became another hot spot for new-wave music at this time, and SO36 competed with CBGB in NY about being the best new wave venue in the world.

The club is still a gathering place for innovators and music fans, and concerts are organized regularly.

Public transport, bike or walking

U-Bahn underground trains or S-Bahn regional elevated trains are the fastest and best way to get around Berlin. If the distance you are going to travel is not that long, a bus can be an alternative. A seat on the second floor of a double-decker gives you a good view and is good for getting to know the city.

Cycling is also a viable option as the city has a flat location and it is relatively easy to get around. Avoid the busiest streets and choose less busy streets instead.

In Kreuzberg, many people cycle, but the traffic is intense, for example in Oranienstrasse. So it's best to be careful. Sometimes I am surprised by the lack of helmet use.

Getting to know the city by walking is best of all, but choosing small areas at a time. It is far between the blocks and there is much to explore along the way.

So make sure to wear good shoes.

And don't forget to look up.

Why Is Romeo and Juliet (1968) So Beloved? A Look at Franco Zeffirelli's Film

Countless film adaptations of Romeo and Juliet have been created. Franco Zeffirelli's version is considered the best. The following article explores why it's the best one.

Andrea Lawrence has a master's in creative writing. She studied fiction, poetry, playwriting, and screenwriting.

What Makes Romeo and Juliet (1968) Special?

William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet has had countless reproductions. It has been adapted to multiple mediums: ballets, paintings, TV shows, and operas. One of the most enduring film versions comes from the 1960s. Many have called it the best film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet because it's the closest to the actual play.

The film has certain qualities typical of '60s and '70s cinema: soft lighting, romantic music, long beautiful hair, camera pans and tilts, and odd homoerotic hints (the pants the teenage boys wear in this movie are outrageous.) The movie is just as much a window into Shakespeare's time as it is the late '60s.

Romeo and Juliet (1968) was nominated for four Oscars. It received two of those awards:

  • It was nominated for best picture; it lost to Oliver!
  • Franco Zeffirelli was nominated for best director; he lost to Carol Reed who directed Oliver!
  • Pasqualino De Santis won for best cinematography.
  • Danilo Donati won for best costume design.

It was the most financially successful Shakespeare film of its time. No Shakespeare adaptation since has been nominated for Best Picture.

Table of Contents

The article will explore the following points as reasons for why Romeo and Juliet (1968) is considered the greatest film version of the play:

  • It's an old play adapted for modern audiences, making it easy to understand.
  • A gentle-hearted Romeo comes off as a heartthrob.
  • Emotions were prioritized over lengthy lines. Young people can relate to emotions more so than Shakespearean verse.
  • The use of real locations helps viewers to envision the settings depicted in Shakespeare's play.
  • The enchanting score is a perfect match for the director's focus on sentimentality.
  • The use of colors makes it easy to follow who is a Montague and who is a Capulet.
Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet early in his career. It premiered around 1597. The plot is based on an Italian tale: The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet Adapted for Modern Audiences

I personally am a big fan of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. The movie is set in a neo-modern world rather than 16th-century Verona. It was meant to be a movie accessible to people in the 1990s. It has guns instead of swords, flashy cars, ending credit music by Radiohead, a drag queen-esque Mercutio, and Paul Rudd in an astronaut costume.

One of the greatest romantic scenes of all time is in Romeo + Juliet: when Romeo discovers Juliet while looking through a fish tank. The 1996 film spoke directly to the hearts of Generation X and young Millenials.

The 1968 Romeo and Juliet spoke to the teenagers of its time. In fact, this was the first film version to feature characters close to the age of the characters from the play:

  • Olivia Hussey was 15 years old when she played Juliet. The character is 13 going on 14 in the play.
  • Leonard Whiting was 17 years old when he played Romeo. The character is around 16 or 17 years old in the play.

If you watch the movie, you'll notice both actors perfectly command their scenes. The two lead actors have noticeable chemistry. Hussey is so adorable in the balcony scene that it can bring a tear to your eye when you know how things are going to end.

Young viewers in the '60s could connect to Shakespeare because of this movie. It was relatable to their lives and fantasies.

A Gentle-Hearted Romeo Appeals to Young Audiences

Franco Zeffirelli's interpretation of the play is different from mine. He focuses more on the pacifist and gentle qualities of Romeo. He sees Romeo as a kind-hearted and innocent character. Romeo is described as a well-managed youth. I see Romeo as an idiosyncratic character who is impulsive, love-sick, easily tempted, and haphazard. I love Romeo because his idealism is beautiful, but I see him as more crude than innocent. He is on the cusp of manhood, and he is flirting with patriarchal concepts, including bawdy humor.

Shakespeare describes Romeo as a flawed but lovable character. Zeffirelli's Romeo is saintly if not perfect.

After studying this play multiple times, I find Romeo is a cursed character–his actions in the play are connected to six people's deaths, including his own. Romeo struggles to have his own agency because of the expectations and rules of society. He is fated to tragedy.

Whiting's performance is intended to make teenage hearts swoon. Romeo openly weeps when exiled. He has big teenage emotions.

Whiting's portrayal has traditionally feminine qualities to it. He openly cries, he openly cares about others, and he is seen as attractive and winsome with a clean-shaven face rather than bearded, burly, and fierce.

Romeo is seen as someone who doesn't fully fit in with his peers. When the Nurse is mocked by his friends, he doesn't join them in their jests. When his friends are battling Capulet cohorts at the beginning of the movie, Romeo isn't there. He is off on his own, daydreaming about Rosaline, his first obsession.

Whiting's portrayal of Romeo makes the character seem incredibly fragile and meek. He is boyish and romantic. He fits many of the ideals of a teenage heartthrob in the late '60s and early '70s. His sweet performance is appealing to young and sensitive viewers.

Zeffirelli wanted a sympathetic Romeo. He took out the scene where Romeo fights and kills Count Paris.

Here are other scenes that were cut from the movie:

  • Romeo reads the party list and discovers Rosaline's name on it.
  • Romeo visits an apothecary for poison.

A big reason why this movie is better than other Romeo and Juliet adaptations is that Whiting and Hussey actually seem to genuinely be in love. They do a beautiful job conveying the love Romeo and Juliet shared for each other.

In the 1968 film, the protagonists have a sense of their own free will–until after Tybalt's death when their fates become increasingly morose.

The movie makes their downfall more about their silly childish actions and strong felt feelings rather than the conditions of society, which I feel is at the heart of the play.

Emotions Prioritized over Lengthy Speeches

The director wanted unknown teenage actors to play the lead roles. Zeffirelli in his autobiography mentioned that he adapted the play in order to play to Whiting's and Hussey's strengths. Instead of long speeches, the focus was on reaction shots.

He plucked Whiting and Hussey out of obscurity. He taught them how to act, pushing for what he thought would sell movie tickets: a teenage emotional experience.

Franco Zeffirelli's very sensitive version of Romeo is appealing to young audience members who wish to date someone who is considerate, sweet, and easy on the eyes.

Zeffirelli built a romantic fantasy that would satisfy viewers. For instance, instead of focusing on the ideologies in the characters' speeches, he would look for opportunities to have them get close. In the play, Juliet speaks at her window, which is often adapted into a balcony. Romeo talks to her from below. In the movie, Romeo makes his way to the balcony to get close to Juliet.

Romeo is a cursed character in Shakespeare. His actions (indirectly and directly) are connected to six people's deaths.

Created using Canva.

Hussey plays the part of Juliet beautifully. This is one of Shakespeare's harder roles to play because there is so much emotional growth and change that it can be challenging to make it seem real or cohesive.

Hussey's Juliet coyly falls for Romeo at the ball. She quickly grows to love him in the balcony scene. Hussey's girlish laugh during the famous balcony scene gives Juliet life.

The actress conveys to perfection how Juliet is completely torn when her parents command that she marry Count Paris, and she wondrously reveals how Juliet changes to become a master manipulator when conspiring with Friar Laurence to fake her death. It's hard to beat the actress' performance conveying the sadness Juliet felt when she wakes in the tomb to find Romeo dead.

The director had the young actress focus on emotions rather than lines. In fact, for her audition, Hussey learned the monologue for when Juliet fakes her own death. She insisted on performing it at callbacks. She was upset when it came time to film the scene because the monologue was chopped down to a measly three lines.

The Use of Real Locations

The movie was filmed in various parts of Italy including the Palazzo Borghese in Artena, the town of Tuscania, Palazzo Piccolomini in Pienza, and the old town of Gubbio. Relying on real locations helped the movie to come alive. It helped to build the fantasy of the fictional Verona.

The cinematography and on-location set designs helped to bring out the world of Shakespeare's play. People no longer had to imagine what that play's setting looked like, they could simply refer to the movie with its old paved walkways, grand stairways, humble chapel, lavish houses, native flora, and ancient tomb.

The Enchanting Score

Nino Rota created the gorgeous score that swells with sentimentality. The music relies heavily on woodwinds and strings. Rota's score harkens to the Renaissance period while also having a treatment that's on par with cinema from the late '60s and early '70s.

One of the most memorable scenes of the movie is a solo at the Capulet ball. The song takes place just before Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time. With an enchanting vibrato, Glen Weston sings "What Is a Youth".

With his otherworldly voice, the troubadour draws in people. He is accompanied by a flute, harp, and strings. His song, which is repeated many times throughout the movie, conveys the core themes of Romeo and Juliet. The song is an example of diegesis. Here are the first lines of the song:

What is a youth?

Impetuous fire

What is a maid?

Ice and desire

The world wags on

A rose will bloom

It then will fade

So does a youth

So does the fairest maid.

Who Was Nino Rota?

Nino Rota was prolific for his era. He composed the scores for several big films including La Dolce Vita and The Godfather. He wrote scores for more than 150 films.

The beautiful thing about Romeo and Juliet (1968) is the audio is so enchanting that it could be shared as a radio play. The soundtrack, which you can find on iTunes, has lines from the movie mixed in with songs and sound effects. It was originally released as a vinyl record. The soundtrack has nine songs and runs for 43 minutes. The movie's run time is 2 hours and 18 minutes.

Rota teamed up with Eugene Walter to create the neo-Elizabethan ballad "What Is a Youth", which plays multiple times in different ways throughout the movie, sometimes with lyrics. The song is used to draw out the emotions of the film. The song plays more into the beauty and magic of the couple rather than the sadness of their demise. The lyrics were borrowed from other Shakespeare plays.

Some critics have negatively reviewed "What Is a Youth" for being cloyingly sweet. There are times that the movie and score beat its audience over the head with emotion.

The movie overall is a masterclass in capturing sentimentality. I think the play itself doesn't focus so much on emotion but rather balances out the characters’ emotions with their thoughts. The play considers the competing interests of society and the powers of fate. Of course, the bard's actual play is the best version, but the 1968 film does an excellent job of adapting it to the big screen.

How the Score Plays to the Emotions of the Movie

As previously mentioned, the score does an impressive job of conveying the emotions of the characters. It also hints at the tragic things to come. I've listed pivotal score moments below.

Romeo and Juliet's Wedding

A church organ plays as Romeo and Juliet get married. "What Is a Youth" is sung by a different singer than the one at the Capulet Ball. Also, this version of the song is in another language.

The music helps capture the seriousness of the couple's decision, the religious nature of their experience, and the foreboding sense that something dreadful is coming. The music ultimately captures the devotion Romeo and Juliet have for each other.

The Deadly Duels

When Mercutio dies, strings are played to heighten tension. Tremolo strings are a big part of the Romeo and Juliet score overall.

The music right after Mercutio dies reminds me of disturbing scenes in Hitchcock films where a character falls into madness. Romeo does have a descent into madness; his anger magnifies. All he can see is red.

The brass section picks up when Tybalt and Romeo fight. There is a plea from the music for the two teens to stop fighting. The music conveys fear, paranoia, and Romeo's feelings to avenge Mercutio. The song slowly comes to a lull when Prince Escalus comes onto the scene. The prince decides how Romeo will be punished for killing Tybalt.

Romeo and Juliet's Last Happy Moments Together

Before Romeo leaves Verona (he has 24 hours to get his affairs in order), he spends an intimate night with Juliet. The music for this scene is gentle and romantic. There are slow strums of a guitar and a gentle flute section. It sounds like a beautiful Italian wedding song. The music is simple; it could be assumed that someone is playing a guitar near where Romeo and Juliet are professing their love to each other.

A version of "What Is a Youth" is played just as Romeo and Juliet are about to part. It's their last moments together where they're both awake and alive.

Juliet Seeks Help from Friar Laurence

There is hopeful yet forbidding music that plays when Juliet meets with Friar Laurence. He comes up with a plan to help Juliet reunite with Romeo. When the sleeping potion is mentioned, the music becomes frenetic and draws out the tension of the story. The tremolo strings are noticeable.

Juliet Fakes Her Death

After Juliet fakes her death, there is a sad funeral scene. A young choir sings, a subtle reminder of how young the protagonist is. The song takes a serious approach to "What Is a Youth."

Balthazar tells Romeo of Juliet's death, and the music becomes noticeably sad and dramatic. When Romeo arrives at the tomb, the woodwinds hint at his grief and the harp plays to his happy memories of Juliet.

When Romeo looks at Tybalt's body, the music becomes dark and reflects the leitmotif played during their battle. As Romeo studies Juliet's seemingly beautiful face, which is somehow untouched by death, he contemplates taking the poison. The music switches from romantic and sad to grim.

Juliet Realizes Romeo Is Dead

When Juliet wakes after Romeo's death, the music plays to her hope that she'll find Romeo and run away with him. There are anxious strings that hint at something terrible. She finds Romeo and discovers the poison; the music again becomes dramatic. . . it harkens back to the battle scene with Romeo and Tybalt.

The Ending

The final section of the score is yet another version of "What Is a Youth". The Capulets and Montagues are criticized for their rivalry that led to Romeo and Juliet's deaths. The music is overly dramatic with a voiceover from Laurence Oliver. It fits the Hollywood zeitgeist of the time.

The Capulets and Montagues Wear Specific Colors

The two rival families in the movie wear different colors. The Capulets wear red; the Montagues wear blue. This makes it easy for the audience to follow the story.

My Thoughts on Color

I do think the color choice for the two families is somewhat odd. I think the colors would make more sense reversed since the Montagues are seen as impulsive, plucky, and very forward. It was Romeo who broke enemy lines to attend the Capulet ball. Montagues make more sense in red.

As for the Capulets, Juliet is an incredibly intelligent 13-year-old. She goes through an incredible transformation in a short timeframe. She starts as a child who barely has any thoughts on marriage and meekly listens to her mom and nurse when they discuss her marriage prospects. Two weeks away from 14, Juliet is talked about as a soon-to-be bride.

Juliet goes from innocently attending the Capulet Ball, falling in love with a Montague, having both reservation and poetry in her lines, getting married, and fighting for her right to her own agency when her parents attempt to marry her off to Count Paris. Juliet's character growth doesn't stop there. She conspires with Friar Laurence to get back with Romeo, the plan of course fails, but it shows her willingness to fight for true love.

Juliet is the more thoughtful character in the couple. Romeo is the more impulsive one. Juliet makes more sense in blue; Romeo makes more sense in red.

My associations with color are strikingly different from the director's. I've read that his interpretation might have been that the Capulets were new money and the Montagues were old money; therefore, the Capulets were red and the Montagues were blue.
